Gotenks isn’t absorbed because Gohan was toying with Buu, but because Buu had an ability no one in the cast was privy to yet. In the manga, Gohan wastes no time in beating Evil Buu into submission. While Gohan doesn’t end up defeating Buu, the ritual he undergoes to gain his Ultimate state does give him an opportunity to make up for past mistakes. This ends up being a huge problem when Majin Buu appears and Gohan can’t step up the occasion. While he’s not so out of shape where he can’t bring himself up to Cell Games level with a few months of casual training, he’s not living up to his potential. It’s an unfortunate situation, but Gohan comes out of it stronger.įollowing the end of the Cell games, Gohan allows himself to slack off. Goku is putting weight on his son’s shoulders, but it’s a weight only Gohan can carry. While the story doesn’t linger on this moment for long, Gohan clearly struggles with triggering the transformation. Gohan is forced to trigger Super Saiyan in a harsh environment under abnormal circumstances. Goku & Gohan end up training in the Room of Spirit and Time, a chamber where one day outside is one year inside. Realizing that SSJ1 isn’t enough, Goku and Vegeta both come to the conclusion that Super Saiyan must be pushed. From there, Gohan plays a passive role, moving the story along in the background while the other characters fight. The most action he gets to see before the Cell Games is when he kicks Dr. In spite of all the progress Gohan makes power-wise on Namek, he ends up sitting out the first half of the Cell arc almost entirely. Coupled with the near death power up he got post-Recoome and Gohan’s exits the Namek arc far stronger than he entered. Similarly, the unlocking allows for Gohan’s power to gradually rise over the course of the Namek arc. Even with his potential unlocked, however, Saichoro notes how there’s even more power latent within Gohan. Saichoro unlocks Krillin’s potential and later Gohan’s. Krillin & Gohan briefly end up splitting up, with the former meeting Saichoro– the God of Namek. As Vegeta tears through Frieza’s army, Gohan and Krillin seize an opportunity to travel across Namek. Vegeta is left to kill Cui, Dodoria, Zarbon, and the rest of the army while Krillin & Gohan sneak around Namek trying to stay alive. While they can handle the grunts just fine, they’re immediately outclassed by Frieza’s inner circle. Although Gohan and Krillin do image training on their way to Namek, there’s no way they could have prepared for Frieza’s army. Gohan’s first substantial power boost in Dragon Ball Z comes around midway through the Namek arc, and it’s quite necessary at that.
